Exploring How Young Animals Resemble Their Parents

RATIONALE: The purpose of the lesson is to have students observe and describe how young animals resemble their parents. This lesson will give students the foundation knowledge they need to understand the similarities in physical appearance of young animals and their parents. It will also allow for them to understand differences in different species, through the physical appearances.. The knowledge can be applied to genetics and how young animals are similar and different to their parents in future grades. LEARNING OBJECTIVES(S): Formative Observation Objective: After matching the young animal parts with the parent animal, students will record two pieces of evidence showing that the young animal resembles the parent animal Formative Observation Objective: While reading Are You my Mother, students will write or draw five body parts of animals that told them the animal was not the baby’s mother. Summative Observation Objective: Using their observations from both investigations, students will write or verbally state a claim, and with three pieces of evidence describe how young animals resemble their parents Content and Inquiry Standard Objective: Using their observations from each investigation, students will write or verbally state an accurate claim and give at least three pieces of evidence from their observations/discoveries to accurately explain how young animals resemble their parents.
